The
Urban Passage, Inc.,
inspired vision of Kimberly
Y Moore, is a faith based non-profit
dedicated to serving, teaching, inspiring and
mentoring young people detained in the Northern VA
Juvenile Detention Home in Alexandria, VA. Our
vision and passion is the rebuilding and restoration
of the lives of economically, socially,
educationally and spiritually underserved youth held
in custody in juvenile detention facilities by
bringing together partners in the community who will
invest their time, talent and resources to help
transform them from Victims to Victors. We partner
with community organizations and individuals to
provide programs designed to build or rebuild
foundations needed for these talented and capable
young people to thrive in their lives. We will show
them that thriving is not with out obstacles but how
using their faith they can endure and overcome them
to see their dreams, visions and goal achieved. Join
us in sharing LIFE.
Why
the name The Urban Passage, Inc.?
It
represents the rites of passage for urban at-risk
kids of all ethnicities, economical status and
educational levels, that have to fight for their
success even their life. The sheer determination
these kids directed at negative purposes let’s us
know they can take that same determination directed
at a life full of opportunity. It will be theirs if
they want.
We
believe at the very least they will be required to
take the 3 hard steps on their journey. Our
partners, staff and board believe we are called and
equipped to assist them on the journey.
Draw
The Line – Each young person will have to
purpose in his or her heart and decide in their mind
– Enough is enough. They are now ready to set a
standard for him or her to live up to them. They
will discover this standard when they start to see
the possibilities shown to them by our Community
organization partners and volunteers who invest in
their lives.
Cross
the Bridge – No one is successful by
himself or herself. Each young person will need
someone to help him or her walk the journey across
the bridge. A journey that is scary has unstable and
unrecognizable parts of the road, obstacles, and
that leads to a place that is unknown to them. Our
mentoring program, Surviving with Friends, will be
the glue that holds together the values, behavior
changes, skills learned, and goals discovered and
defined while at the Juvenile Detention Home. Our
mentors will be trained to understand, nurture,
provide suggestions for more successful outcomes of
problems, support the family bond, and incorporate
healthy boundaries for a long lasting relationship.
Don’t
Look Back – This is by far the toughest
thing to do. These courageous young people with the
help of family, friends and mentors want help to
stay the course. They don't want to look back. That
rovering eye, keeps many of us from moving on to
fulfilling our dreams, visions and goals for our
lives. The Urban Passage, Inc. will work closely
with our Community organization partners and mentors
to help these courageous young people to stay the
course, intervene as needed and requested. Keeping
the view looking forward not back.
